More than fifty percent of all people diagnosed with kidney cancer will die from this disease, because the symptoms for kidney cancer do not typically show up until the cancer has spread. Older patients are at greater risk, with only one third of patients 70 years of age or older surviving for more than five years after diagnosis. Over the last thirty years, deaths attributed to kidney cancer have slowly increased.

- A mass or lump in the abdomen
- Fever that is not due to a cold or flu
- Swelling of the ankles and legs
- Kidney infection or kidney stones.
- Another quite common symptom is pain in the lower back or a swelling in the kidney area.

If you notice any of these problems, talk with your doctor, as they could be caused by less serious conditions. Your doctor will run tests to determine whether or not they are related to kidney cancer.
